My Psychotherapy Practice

My clinical practice focuses on individual psychotherapy and couples therapy, although I also have considerable experience in family therapy and group therapy, as well as professional consultation and supervision.  The majority of my clients see me for relatively short periods of time (6-12 sessions) to deal with life crises and focused goals that may involve symptoms of anxiety, depression, and/or confusion.  A significant minority of my clients are engaged in long-term therapy (six months or longer) that focuses on self-exploration and personal growth, although I would like to think that successfully confronting developmental crises and challenges can also lead to notable intrapersonal and interpersonal changes that involve general growth and well-being.  After all, most of us put a high premium on living a courageous life that includes seeking new challenges as well as maintaining emotional health and well-being.

My therapy practice is integrative and draws upon a number of psychotherapy orientations in order to meet the needs of individual clients.  As such, I have been trained in, as well as supervised and taught at the doctoral level, the following approaches to psychotherapy: crisis intervention, brief psychotherapy, constructivist psychotherapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, emotion-focused psychotherapy, Gestalt psychotherapy, experiential psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, humanistic and existential therapy, psychodrama, solution-focused therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and group therapy. The types of issues and diagnoses I deal with in my practice include:
  • Anxiety
  • Stress and trauma, including PTSD
  • Depression
  • Loss and grief, including suicide
  • Identity issues, including gender and sexuality
  • Personality disorders
  • Adjustment disorders
  • Developmental issues  and aging
  • Relationship conflicts and issues
  • Marriage, separation, and divorce
  • Parenting issues and family relationships, including intergenerational issues

Examples of the types of clients I see and psychotherapy services I offer include the following:

  • Individual therapy with clients seeking help with significant life transitions such as adolescents in the process of becoming independent; midlife men and women dealing with painful relationship changes, work transitions, or trauma; seniors confronting retirement and aging or end of life issues.
  • Couples therapy with couples entertaining the start or end of a relationship; couples dealing with communication problems or conflict from stressors such as affairs and extended family relationships; parenting issues with children, especially adolescents or young adults.
  • Crisis intervention and suicide.  I have 20 published articles on the topic of suicide and although serious suicidal risk is relatively unusual among my clientele, I do have expertise in assessing and managing suicide risk.
  • Consultation and supervision.  I enjoy working with and providing a fresh perspective to other therapists and therapists in training, as well consulting to organizations and agencies regarding mental health issues, as well as coaching, team-building, strategic planning, and organizational problem-solving.
